With the legislative session ending last Friday and the cuts to state education announced, Lumpkin County administrators are continuing our work on the plans for the 2020-2021 school year. Our task force participants have been meeting virtually and in-person, we are monitoring what other school systems are announcing, and sharing ideas with our colleagues across the state and southeast. Please know that we are using the feedback from your survey responses, consulting health officials in our county, region, and state, and we will continue to develop a plan that meets the needs of our community. When our plan is finalized in a couple weeks, we will share it via social media, our websites, and in the Dahlonega Nugget. We hope that you are enjoying the mild weather in Georgia, that you are being safe and responsible with your interactions with others, and we cannot wait to see you all soon! #TR1BE

TR1BE, With so much uncertainty remaining as we navigate our days, weeks, and months, we know that many questions are swirling concerning the plans of our upcoming school year. We could put out a plan today that would likely need to change multiple times as health concerns and guidance changes over time. We are not behind the eight ball. Rather, we are taking things seriously, studying our options, and formulating research-based plans of action for the new school year. Our leadership team in Lumpkin County is currently meeting through email, virtually, and in person to work out details for the following areas: student and staff wellness, facilities, technology, school nutrition, transportation, instruction, assessment, and virtual learning. These focus groups will work in coordination with our school board to publish a final plan in mid-July. In the meantime, itโ€™s important for you all to know thisโ€”student safety has been, is, and always will be our top priority in Lumpkin County. As parents, you will have a face-to-face option and a virtual option for your children. What those look like will be determined by the findings of our focus groups over the next month. Rest assured, we are working tirelessly to provide the best education in the safest environment possible for your children. We know other school systems are posting their tentative plans now, and we want you to know that we arenโ€™t asleep on this topic. We like to take a calculated, strategic approach to our planning process. If you have questions or concerns that you would like to share with any of the focus groups mentioned above, please email jason.lemley@lumpkinschools.com or rob.brown@lumpkinschools.com. We will be sure to pass along your correspondence to the focus group leader. Thank you for your continued support of Lumpkin County Schools!

Even during COVID-19, your child can receive mental health support through the phone or video. Simply contact Georgia HOPE at 706-279-0405 OR https://gahope.org/make-a-referral/. We at Georgia HOPE have learned along with you that children will not be returning to school for the remainder of the school year. We always depend on educators and other community partners to identify and link children and families in need to our services daily. Typically, we see a large spike in referrals prior to school letting out for the summer which allows us to serve families when school is not in session. Without your referrals we have no way of knowing which children are at risk of suffering alone until they are able to return to school this fall. We are continuing to offer all of our services while following appropriate CDC guidance to keep ourselves and clients safe.
