SUPERINTENDENT DR. ROB BROWN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
FROM LUMPKIN COUNTY SCHOOLS

Board of Education Names Deputy Superintendent Sharon Head as Sole Finalist for Superintendent Starting January 1, 2024

Dahlonega, Georgia – On Monday, September 11, 2023, Superintendent Dr. Rob Brown publicly announced his plans to retire effective December 31, 2023, after seven and a half years as superintendent of Lumpkin County Schools and twenty-eight years of service in public education in Georgia.

“I am grateful to the Lumpkin County Board of Education for giving me an opportunity to lead this outstanding school system and to work with the incredible educators who fill our school buildings each day. Throughout my career, I have been blessed to work with amazing teammates in Lumpkin, Jeff Davis, Hart, Douglas, and Cobb County where I grew up and my career began. I am proud of the successes we’ve had and the progress we’ve made during my tenure as school superintendent in Lumpkin County. I have had an amazing group of school and system leaders who made my job much easier and more enjoyable, and I am forever thankful for each of them. I am thankful for the partnerships we’ve developed to better serve our students and our community. I am thankful for those who filled this role before me, David Luke and Dewey Moye, and have helped support our school system each step of the way since I moved here. Mostly, I am thankful for all of the people I have been able to work with each day. We’ve been through some tough challenges together and because of their relentless focus on doing what is best for our students, our system will continue to thrive.” Dr. Rob Brown

Dr. Brown began his career as a teacher and a coach in 1996. His roles over the years included teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, executive director of high schools, and superintendent of two school districts. Throughout his career, Brown served on and chaired numerous boards and nonprofits, won regional, state, and national awards, and continues to be a trusted leader in the state of Georgia. He served as the Georgia School Superintendent’s Association President in 2021-22 and was selected as a Georgia Association of Educational Leaders’ Jim Puckett Award winner in 2022.

Mr. Bobby Self, Board of Education Chairman, commended Dr. Brown for his service to this community: “The Board of Education chose Dr. Rob Brown as our superintendent almost eight years ago now, and we appreciate what he has done for Lumpkin County Schools since beginning in 2016.”

The Board voted unanimously to appoint Mrs. Sharon Head as the Sole Finalist for the forthcoming vacancy. The Board must now wait 14 days to receive public input before they can officially hire Mrs. Head.

We will continue to work with Dr. Brown in the coming months as we transition the role to our Deputy Superintendent, Mrs. Sharon Head. Mrs. Head will take over as Superintendent in January 2024. “With over thirty years as an educator here in Lumpkin County Schools, we are confident that she will keep our district on its forward and upward trajectory. The Board did not feel that we needed to post a vacancy and interview candidates because we have the right person already here on staff who is well-prepared and ready to lead.” Chairman Bobby Self

Vice Chairman Jim McClure added, “Dr. Brown’s commitment to this school system has been second to none. I’ve had the honor to work alongside him for the past eight years, and he is leaving a big hole to fill. However, we know that Mrs. Head can and will fill that hole, and we are looking forward to continuing the great things happening in Lumpkin County Schools.”

Mrs. Sharon Head has been getting up every morning for most of her life and walking through the doors of Lumpkin County Schools. Head attended LCSS as a student from grades K-12, went on to graduate with her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from North Georgia College, and her specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. Sharon Head spent twenty years as a classroom teacher, instructional lead teacher, assistant principal and principal of Long Branch Elementary School. She has spent the last ten years at the central office working in human resources and serving as a Director, an Associate Superintendent and most recently as Deputy Superintendent.

The Lumpkin County Board of Education will vote on October 16, 2023 to confirm the appointment of Mrs. Head.
