Solar Eclipse

Dear TR1BE:

We want to inform you of an exciting astronomical event that our school community will have the opportunity to experience together on Monday, April 8, 2024. A solar eclipse will pass over North America, a rare phenomenon providing a learning opportunity for our students. During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely blocks the sun, causing the sky to become dark during the daytime. Here in Lumpkin County, we will not be in the path of the total solar eclipse, but we will experience a partial solar eclipse between 1:45 PM and 4:20 PM with a peak at 3:05 PM.

Monday, April 8th is our first day back from spring break and will be a normal school day for our district. With safety as a top priority and with the partial solar eclipse occurring during dismissal, students and staff will be provided with solar eclipse glasses with the ISO filter recommended by NASA.

Important Reminders:

Þ   Parents who wish to check their child(ren) out of school early to view the eclipse may do so. Please follow normal check-out procedures. Any early check-out on Monday, April 8, 2024, will be an excused absence.

Þ   All extra-curricular and athletic events will continue as scheduled on 4/8/2024.

Þ   Please help us emphasize the importance of not looking directly at the sun without wearing the provided solar eclipse glasses. Regular sunglasses, tinted windows, or looking out of a regular car or bus window do not provide adequate protection and can cause eye damage.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child(ren)’s school. We appreciate your continued support of Lumpkin County Schools!

Sincerely,

Sharon Head
