Mr. Nathan Gerrells has been selected and approved to serve as the next Principal of Lumpkin County Middle School beginning the 2021-2022 school year.

Mr. Gerrells, a 2002 graduate of Lumpkin County High School, earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences Education and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Georgia. After that, Mr. Gerrells earned an Educational Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Kennesaw State University.

Mr. Gerrells has accumulated 15 years of experience in education with 14 of those years invested in Lumpkin County Schools. He has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and was the 2013 Lumpkin County School System Teacher of the Year. He served for the past four years as an assistant principal at Long Branch Elementary School.

In addition to his formal educational experiences, Mr. Gerrells has completed the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders Aspiring Principals Program and participated in the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement program.

Mr. Gerrells will officially begin his duties on July 1, 2021.


We are pleased to announce the appointments of new school administrators as approved by the Lumpkin County Board of Education on June 14, 2021.

Mrs. Kendra Beckworth will serve as the Assistant Principal at Long Branch Elementary School. She has most recently served as the School Improvement Specialist at Blackburn Elementary and Long Branch Elementary. Before moving into the SIS role, she served as an elementary teacher at Blackburn for fifteen years.   

Mrs. Lori Overmyer will serve as the Assistant Principal at Lumpkin County Middle School. She has most recently served as a Math Teacher at Lumpkin County Middle School and was the 2019 Lumpkin County System Teacher of the Year. In addition to seventeen years of experience teaching in 6-12 classrooms, Mrs. Overmyer also coached softball and basketball and served as the Math Department Head.

Ms. Katie Powell will serve as an Assistant Principal at Lumpkin County High School. She has most recently served as a Science Teacher at Lumpkin County Middle School, the Science Department Head, and the chair of the 8th Grade Professional Learning Community. In addition, she previously served as the Head Volleyball and Head Swimming coach at Lumpkin County High School.

Mr. Brian Matthews will transfer from his role as an Assistant Principal at Lumpkin County Middle School to Assistant Principal at Lumpkin County High School. Mr. Matthews has completed four years as an Assistant Principal at LCMS and previously served as a high school Special Education Teacher, a Guidance Counselor, and Head Wrestling Coach at Lumpkin County High School.

After dozens of interviews, we couldn’t be more proud to appoint these individuals to their respective new roles.
